To give some perspective, this was about a year before the first Internet Worm appeared. On November 2, 1988 the Morris Worm [more here] raged across the fledgling Internet. It spread using a command injection attack against Sendmail, a buffer overflow against fingerd, and brute force password guessing against rsh and rexec. Twenty years later, web applications still suffer from these exact types of vulnerabilities.
